FreeOrion Space Opera simulator is a free, space-themed computer program and online game based on the original Star Trek series. The game is set four thousand years ago, in the uncertain future of a galaxy very similar to the galaxy depicted in the original Star Trek series. In the future, mankind has mastered cryogenic hibernation technology, using it to travel back to the time of their birth and thus avert the devastating ice-age which killed their earlier ancestors. But when a new ship is launched from the United Earth, the crew discovers that the vast Klingon Empire has recently attacked the United Federation and took over much of its space craft and technology. The crew must escape from the destroyed ship and return to the Enterprise, while combating strange and powerful foes who have seized the Enterprise and are intent on destroying it.
FreeOrion Space Opera is a first person free download space adventure game where you play the role of a crewman aboard a space ship and have to survive. You can choose to play as a Federation officer, a Klingon warrior, a human crewman, or a Romulan officer. The action takes place in three dimensional space with no visible boundaries or 'line' until you travel so close to the edge that your view may be obstructed. For this reason, the player must develop the knowledge of spatial awareness and use that to plan their next move, and even consider the effects of weather on their spacecraft. It takes just minutes to learn the basics of the game and more than an hour to master a full space mission.
One of the more interesting parts of FreeOrion are the missions and quests that unlock additional content and items as you progress through the game's many spaceships. As you complete each mission, you will see a Starport which instantly raises your ship's rank and provides useful abilities like repairing damage and launching satellites. Other stations give bonuses to your rank, some increase crew skill levels or provide crew members which are stronger and can withstand more damage. Some provide valuable commodities which can be sold for a profit or delivered to another system to be used by other players. Once you complete all missions in a level, you can move to the next stage and continue the free for life in the starports.
